Web-safe fonts are those fonts likely to be present on a wide range of computer systems, and are used by web content authors to increase the chance that content will be displayed in their chosen font. If a visitor to a website does not have the specified font, their browser will select an alternative.

When designing a website we try to use web-safe fonts whenever possible so that the content will be readable by all website visitors and search engines as well.  It is possible to use specific fonts to achieve a custom look-and-feel in the website but we will need to convert the text to an image so that all browsers are able to view it the same way.  The drawback to converting text to an image is that disabled website visitors that are using screen readers or text-only browsers will not be able to see the text.  Also search engines will not be able to read the text in the image and it will not benefit your overall search engine ranking.

We find that a “middle-of-the-road” approach to using web-safe fonts and images is best.  We suggest having your menu navigation, page headers, and content text be one of the “core fonts for the Web” and using custom fonts converted to images for your main site banner or header, module headers, or areas of the site that you want to give emphasis or have a custom look.
